A few years back the inaugural Black Women in Architecture Brunch was planned and coordinated by Architect Katherine Williams. This past year the brunch was held in Washington DC following the AIA’s Women’s Leadership Summit. In October, Cleveland will join in the fun and host a similar event for the architecture + design communities for a brunch of networking and sharing. This brunch invites architects, designers and students of the like together for a chance to meet and mingle over food and drink.
The Why?
The Directory of African American Architects currently records the names of 11 AA Women in the state of Ohio, majority of whom are in the Cleveland area, nationally the 450 mark was just passed. These 11 women continue to be trailblazers in the profession and serve as motivation to those following behind. The diversity in the design field as a whole is also slowly changing, 3.5% (2016 statistic) of interior designers are AA, though in small numbers, black architects and designers do exist! And they are here, working across many fields, traditionally and non, locally and beyond.
